The FIDE World Chess Rapid & Blitz Championships finished in Doha

30 December 2016 The FIDE World Chess Rapid & Blitz Championships took place in the capital of Qatar from 25 till 30 December. The participants of both Open and Women's sections were the world strongest and the most famous chess players.

In the open tournament of the rapid championship, three players finished on 11/15 – Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Alexander Grischuk (Russia), and Magnus Carlsen (Norway). The highest average rating of the opposition gave Vassily Ivanchuk the gold, Alexander Grischuk took second place.

Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine) won her title in a dominating style with 9.5/12. Alexandra Kosteniuk (Russia) was second with 8.5. Nana Dzagnidze (Georgia) was third with 8 points.

Sergey Karjakin (Russia) celebrated a victory in the open event of the blitz championship, collecting 16.5 out of 21. Magnus Carlsen scored the same amount of points, but his tie-break was inferior, thus giving the Norwegian only second place.  Daniil Dubov, Alexander Grischuk (both - Russia) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) tied for third place with 14.5 points. Dubov's tie-break was superior, therefore he won the bronze.

Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine) repeated her success in blitz, taking the gold with 13 points out of 17. The Russian duo Valentina Gunina and Ekaterina Lagno finished half a point behind her. Gunina's tie-break gave her second place.

The video broadcast of the tournament in English was organized by "Chesscast". The commentators were GM Evgenij Miroshnichenko and IM Anna Rudolf. During the broadcast many interviews with chess players and officials were made by the director of content of Chess.com Peter Doggers and the FIDE Press-officer Anastasia Karlovich.
